Court Grants Former UBC Boss Bail
Mr Paul Kihika

Kampala:  Mr Paul Kihika, a former Managing Director of Uganda broadcasting cooperation (UBC) was on August 7,2017 granted bail by the Anti Corruption Court.

The anti-graft court in Kololo on August 01, 2017 remanded Mr Kihika to Luzira Prison on charges of embezzlement and causing financial loss to the national broadcaster.

Grade One Magistrate, Her Worship Pamella Lamunu ordered that he pay Shs3.5m cash, deposit his passport with court, and his sureties sign a non-cash bond of Shs30m to ensure Mr Kihika's return to court on September 04, 2017.

He was represented by his lawyer Mr Jotham Mugarura who argued the bail application on constitutional grounds, and presented four sureties who included family and friends.

The prosecution informed court that investigations into Mr Kihika's case are still ongoing. Mr Kihika is also being investigated by police on allegations of embezzlement, abuse of office, false accounting, causing financial loss and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Court heard that Mr Kihika knowingly received the money between May and August 2014 for an official trip to China which he did not attend, thereby causing UBC a financial loss of $9,510 (about Shs34m).

He has since denied the allegation saying the money in question was stolen when his office was broken into and the accountability taken, and that the Directorate of Public Prosecution has also cleared him of the said charges.
