Accountant to Serve Five Years for Embezzlement

1st, August 2017

Kampala:The Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court sentenced a former vision group senior accountant to five years in jail. Mr. Peter Mubaale, 65, was found guilty of embezzlement of Shs262 from Vision Group.

High Court Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Margaret Tibulya, in her ruling, ordered Mr. Mubaale to refund Shs262m and barred him from holding public office for 10 years. "I do hereby sentence you to five years on counts of embezzlement, diversion of money and false accounting. The jail term will run concurrently," the Hon. Judge ruled. Mr. Mubaale was employed by Vision Group from 1989 up to 2013 when he was interdicted over embezzlement.

According to the Hon. Judge, Mr. Mubaale used to issue original copies of receipts in names that were different from those on the duplicate. He would then submit to the company for crediting customers' accounts, hence depriving the company of its money.

She also noted that the convict converted the cheques issued by advertisers into shillings and used the money for personal use. "I find that Mubaale issued the receipts in question with intent to defraud the company and accordingly convict him of the offence," Hon. Lady Justice Tibulya stated in her judgement.
